Who needs a plan audit?

Most retirement plans with 100 or more participants with account balances at the beginning of the plan year are required to file audited financial statements with their Form 5500. If you’re near that threshold and aren’t sure where you stand, that’s exactly the kind of question we answer every day.

100+ participants with balances is the general threshold that triggers an audit requirement with Form 5500

Frequently asked questions

Does my 401(k) or 403(b) plan need an audit?

Generally, a retirement plan with 100 or more participants with account balances at the start of the plan year must include audited financial statements with its Form 5500. A special "80-120 participant rule" can let plans near that threshold keep filing in the same category as the prior year. We will help you determine your filing status.

When is the plan audit due?

The audit is filed with your Form 5500, which is due seven months after the plan year ends: July 31 for a calendar-year plan. Filing Form 5558 extends the deadline by two and a half months, to October 15.

How much does a plan audit cost?

Cost depends on the plan's size, type, and recordkeeper. Because employee benefit plan audits are a national focus for us, we deliver them at a price competitors can't match. Call 1-888-433-2202 for a quote.

What types of plans do you audit?

We audit 401(k), 403(b), defined benefit, defined contribution, profit sharing, employee stock ownership (ESOP), and health & welfare plans.

What makes Davidson, Doyle & Hilton qualified to audit benefit plans?

We are members of the AICPA Employee Benefit Plan Audit Quality Center (EBPAQC), and our audit partners bring decades of experience with ERISA-regulated plans for clients across the country.

Audit requirements and deadlines change and depend on your plan’s specific facts. Contact us for guidance on your situation.
